Biometric passport

A biometric passport is a combined paper and electronic identity document that uses biometrics to authenticate the identity of travelers. The passport's critical information is stored on a tiny RFID computer chip, much like information stored on smartcards. Like some smartcards, the passport book design calls for an embedded contactless chip that is able to hold digital signature data to ensure the integrity of the passport and the biometric data.

The currently standardized biometrics used for this type of identification system are facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, and iris recognition. These were adopted after assessment of several different kinds of biometrics including retinal scan. The International Civil Aviation Organisation defines the biometric file formats and communication protocols to be used in passports. Only the digital image (usually in JPEG or JPEG2000 format) of each biometric feature is actually stored in the chip. The comparison of biometric features is performed outside the passport chip by electronic border control systems (e-borders). To store biometric data on the contactless chip, it includes a minimum of 32 kilobytes of EEPROM storage memory, and runs on an interface in accordance with the ISO/IEC 14443 international standard, amongst others. These standards ensure interoperability between different countries and different manufacturers of passport books.

• Two identical photos need to be submitted. One must be pasted on the application form, and the other photo should be submitted loose.
  
  
• The photo needs to display a full frontal view of the face. The size of the face from the bottom of your chin to the hairline must be between 1 ¼ inches and 1 3/8 inches.Please look directly into the camera with a neutral expression and without smiling.
  
  
• The facial image must be sharp, clear, and with sufficient contrast. Please avoid photos with reflections or shadows on the face or with red eyes. The background should be neutral and light, providing sufficient contrast to the face and hair (a neutral gray). Reflection from glasses, sunglasses, or tinted glasses is not permitted. The eyes cannot be hidden by the glass frames.
  
  
• The photo needs to be printed on high-quality paper with at least 600 dpi resolution; the colors must present a natural appearance and skin tone. The photo must not have kinks,scratches or stains.
  
  
• Only color photos are acceptable.
  
  
• Photos must be of a high quality.
  
  
• Photos must not have any stapler pin marks disfiguring the face or the background.
  
  
• Photos should have a light background.
  
  
• Proportion of the head in the photo must be 70-80% of the complete photo.

US Passport Regulations

All US passport photos will be taken according to the US Government guide line and
must pass all seven check list described in the Government book.


To obtain a US passport, you need two of 2 x 2 photos.
The photos must be white background, no shadows at all, neutral facial expression, head size from 1 to 1 3/8.

Make sure that these photos satisfy the Government specs, otherwise they will be rejected and sent back to you.
Please remember, after 9-11, all official ID photos are subject to strict rules.
Unless they are photographed by us, please check your photos again before submit, which will save your time and money.

1) right size of the photo - 2 x 2 inches
2) right size of your head - 1 to 1 3/8 from top of hair to chin
3) background OK? - white back ( it it white enough, or pale enough?)
4) no shadows - shadow is one of the common rejection reasons for US immigration office.
We've seen many photos rejected because of the shadow.
3) too light, too dark?
4) your eyes are clearly visible - eye level must be between 1 1/8 to 1 3/4 from bottom of photo.
5) don't smile (at least not too much ) - US government says "Encourage subject to have a natural expression". So be it.

With all applications, you must include two identical recent photographs. These must meet internationally agreed standards and must be of a true likeness of you.

The photographs must:

• be in colour, not black and white;
• be identical;
• be taken within the last month;

• be in clear and sharp focus, with a clear difference between your face and the background;

• show you with a neutral expression and your mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows);
• be of you on your own (no toys, baby's dummy or other people on the photo);
• be professionally printed. Photographs printed at home are not likely to be of an acceptable quality;
• show your full head, without any head covering, unless you wear it for religious beliefs or medical reasons;
• be taken with nothing covering your face. Please make sure nothing covers the outline of your eyes, nose or mouth.
• be a close-up of your head and shoulders so that your head, from the bottom of your chin to your crown is between 29mm and 34mm high; and clear of writing on the front and back.
